Arsenal legend asks club to defend Wilshere
Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas regretted the team’s approach to squandering midfielder Jack Wilshere’s talent. Nicholas hopes the newly recovered player from injury is more commonly played this season.
Wilshere only dived five Premier League matches for the Gunners since 2015/2016. Given the injury, Arsenal last season loaned the 25-year-old to Bournemouth.
In Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers in the English League Cup on Wednesday (20/09/2017), Wilshere finally made a comeback. Manager Arsene Wenger played it for 90 minutes.
“To be honest, nobody thought Wilshere could get back to the level he was in four or five years ago, because the injury was so bad, but if he could achieve it he still deserves to be defended,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
Wilshere’s contract with Arsenal will end in summer 2018. Nicholas wants the Gunners to re-think if they want to sell the academy dropout.
According to Nicholas, Wilshere is more worthy than the three rivals in midfield, namely Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, and Francis Coquelin.
“Is he a better player than Granit Xhaka? Yes, of course he is better than Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin, and the opportunity for him will start coming,” said the 1980s striker.
“Even Tottenham fans admit he showed great determination to get up, too much talent that Arsenal wasted if they surrendered to him,” Nicholas said.
Wilshere is doubtful against West Bromwich Albion on Monday (25/09/2017). However, Wenger is likely to lower him in the Europa League against BATE Borisov three days later.
